Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is an excellent tool for detecting colorectal cancer and polyps.  It involves inserting a thin, flexible tube with a light and video camera into the rectum and guiding it through the colon to inspect for pre-malignant polyps or cancer. If a polyp or other suspicious cells are detected, a small piece can be removed for biopsy to determine if it is benign or cancerous.  Any polyp discovered during the colonoscopy can be removed during this procedure to prevent it from becoming malignant.  Regular colonoscopies are highly recommended for people who have a high risk for colorectal cancer.
