What is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer (commonly referred to as “colon cancer”), essentially cancer in the colon or rectum, is the number two cause of cancer death in men and women.  It occurs when cells lining the colon or rectum begin to divide rapidly and form small tumours or pre-malignant polyps. Though usually benign, some of these polyps may become malignant or cancerous over time. If these cancerous cells grow into the wall of the colon or rectum, the cancer can spread to other organs.

Prevention and Screening

Each year thousands of Canadians die because they are not regularly screened for this curable and preventable disease.  Yet, early disease detection through regular screening is the key to colorectal cancer survival because this deadly disease shows no symptoms in its most curable stages, when cure rates are approximately 90%.

Traditional fecal and colonoscopy screening tests for colorectal cancer are often perceived to be inconvenient and uncomfortable.  As a result, many people avoid or delay being tested until symptoms appear and typically the cancer is in its late stages when cure rates have dropped to less than 10%.

Regular screening to detect colorectal cancers before symptoms appear can save lives!

ColonSentry™

ColonSentry is the world’s first blood test for colorectal cancer.

ColonSentry is as simple and convenient as a routine blood test.  ColonSentry assesses an individual's current risk of having colorectal cancer, or in other words, what the odds are today that an individual actually has colorectal cancer. By adding this risk stratification tool to one's annual health checkup, individuals identified as having increased risk can progress to further diagnostic testing such as colonoscopy where colorectal cancer can be identified in the earlier, more treatable stages of the disease.
